As a reader, libraries have always meant a lot to me. I can remember the first time I went to the library when I was in elementary school. The first time I entered the building filled with aisles of books, my heart raced with excitement. Having a place to go with a litany of knowledge and adventures was a heaven to me.

Of course, nowadays, there are several ways to get books, online, electronic, audiobooks, and bookstores. However, libraries will always hold a special place in my heart. For the past four years, I have worked in a library at my school. It was sad, honestly, to see how small the amount of students coming to get books was. Of course, they came for books for class, but very few came for books simply for enjoyment.

Now, I’m not saying I frequent libraries as much as I used to as a child. As an adult now, I have money to buy books. I have a personal library within my room that houses over a hundred books (148 to be exact, yes I counted).

However, I know there are plenty of people who can’t afford to buy all the books they want to read. But with people not going to the library as much, they truly do stand the chance of being closed forever. I have mad it a personal goal to go to a library at least twice a month in the hopes of showing that they are still useful. I currently rent books I’m interested in buying and read them before committing to spending money.

Libraries will always be important in my hart, and I hope in so many other’s hearts. Understandably, there are several benefits to audiobooks and electronic paperless books. To me, so long as there is a way for everyone to have access to the thousands of knowledgeable and adventurous books, that is what matters.
